Even with economic uncertainty still in the forecast, America’s architects are forecasting improvement for the beleaguered construction industry. The American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Consensus Construction Forecast Panel has not dampened its outlook for the nonresidential buildings market for the rest of 2012 and 2013.

Construction spending in June rose to a 2-1/2 year high as double-digit percentage increases in private residential and nonresidential construction more than offset an ongoing downturn in public construction, according to an analysis of new federal data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said they expect the disparity between private and public construction is likely to persist and urged policy makers to put more funding into infrastructure projects.

A draft bill from Senators Jeff Bingaman, D-NM and Olympia Snowe, R-ME calls for aggressive improvements to the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which provides tax benefits for the installation of energy efficient commercial building improvements. The act is also known as EPACT or 179D.

The nation lost more than 170,000 small businesses during the first two years of the recession, according to an On Numbers analysis of newly released federal data. In 2008, there were 6.96 million small businesses, but according to the latest government data, 6.79 million small businesses remain.
