Thanks for all of the career help through The Ohio Society of CPAs’ website. I have listened to you speak several times and have found your advice to be very helpful.
First off, I am happy in my current financial reporting role of eight years, but am feeling a little over-worked (as I am sure most people are). I recently noticed that a LinkedIn colleague of mine was promoted to a director of financial reporting level position at a company that I have targeted for quite some time. This company is known for promoting individuals, but not necessarily backfilling the previous role. Do you think it is appropriate to ask or express an interest in this person’s prior role without a formal posting from the company?
Please let me know your thoughts on this matter.
Thanks so much for contacting me. I don’t think it at all inappropriate to approach your LinkedIn colleague. While not guaranteed, networking by referral in job search is the most effective method of penetrating an organization. However at this point all you’re seeking is information. That is certainly not intrusive.
I would begin by extending your congratulations on the promotion and inquiring as to whether you could offer your expertise in the position you believe might be available. Even if there is no position, your colleague will now know there is a resource desiring to affiliate and contribute. Here are a few important tips:
- Make sure this is an individual who will keep everything confidential from your current employer. There must be an element of trust.
- Always approach opportunities as opportunities to give... not to get. Practice stating what it is you would like to do for them.
- Be patient and don't give up. Sometimes we back away way too soon because we are impatient for answers and we believe no answer to be rejection. Keep in touch!
