Accounting Careers Awareness Program (ACAP-Ohio)

The Accounting Careers Awareness Program (ACAP-Ohio) is an innovative career development program designed specifically for minority high school students. The program takes place for one-week each summer and provides the opportunity for a select group of students to explore careers in accounting and business while spending a week on a college campus. Because of the generous support of sponsors and donors, students accepted into ACAP-Ohio attend the program completely free of charge.

During the program, students are introduced to accounting, finance, economics, leadership and management as minority CPAs and business leaders share their experiences, provide tips for success and discuss educational opportunities. Throughout the week, students attend informative workshops, interactive discussions, corporate tours mentoring sessions, business luncheons and a college fair for a first-hand look at the accounting profession and educational options for their future. The program wraps up with an all-star awards banquet for students, parents, speakers and corporate sponsors where college scholarships and other awards are presented to attendees.

ACAP-Ohio is presented by The Ohio Society of CPAs and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and hosted at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business.

For parents

ACAP-Ohio is a tremendous opportunity for your child to spend an enriching week on the campus of The Ohio State University to learn about the opportunities that await them if they choose to pursue a career in accounting or business. There is no other event in Ohio that provides this specialized programming or access to accounting professionals that ACAP-Ohio does. ACAP-Ohio will introduce your child to the variety of careers available in accounting and business through interactive sessions, seminars and mentoring sessions. ACAP-Ohio is an enriching experience that will help your child make informed decisions about their educational future and professional career path.

ACAP-Ohio attendees will participate in a structured five and one-half day program that has adult supervision at all times. Adult chaperones spend the night in the residence halls with the students each evening and supervise students during daytime programming. Staff and members of The Ohio Society of CPAs and the National Association of Black Accountants will accompany students to all events and serve as guides on all off-campus activities. The Ohio State University has a full-time campus security patrol to ensure the safety of students on campus.

In the event of an emergency and you need to reach your child during the program, you can call The Ohio Society of CPAs at 800.686.2727 and they can immediately contact a staff person.

ACAP-Ohio participants have the opportunity to earn one of several college scholarships. All scholarships are awarded based on essays written by students during the course of ACAP-Ohio. The essay topic is provided at the beginning of the program.

History & success

Since ACAP-Ohio began in 1996, over 600 minority students have completed the program. These former students have had the chance to explore the accounting profession and learn first-hand what challenges and opportunities await them if they choose a career in accounting or business.

The success of ACAP-Ohio is evident not just in the numbers of students attending, but also in the success rate of the program. The most recent survey results show that nearly 100% of respondents have gone on to college or plan to attend college and more than 76% reported that ACAP-Ohio influenced their choice of college major. Nearly all participants agree that the program gave them a greater appreciation for the role of accountants and CPAs in the business world.

ACAP-Ohio alumni are from all over Ohio. Students who attend will not only learn about important career information, but they will expand their personal networks with new like-minded friends, mentors and role models.
