(COLUMBUS, June 1, 2009) - The Ohio Society of CPAs and the American Accounting Association (AAA) Ohio Region have named Gerald P. Weinstein, CPA Ph.D., the recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Ohio Accounting Educator award. He was presented with the award at the annual AAA Ohio Region awards banquet held in Geneva on the Lake on May 8.

The Outstanding Ohio Accounting Educator award is presented each year to an accounting educator who has made extraordinary contributions to the accounting profession and whose teaching skills and techniques merit special recognition. The award is co-sponsored by The Ohio Society of CPAs and the AAA Ohio Region.

Weinstein is chair of the accountancy department at John Carroll University, where he has taught for 21 years. Though he has primarily taught courses on financial accounting at the undergraduate and graduate levels, he teaches a wide range of accounting subjects, which include introductory courses, advanced tax accounting and the university’s managerial accounting class in the MBA program, in addition to many others.

“Jerry is one of our most popular faculty members,” said Roland L. Madison, CPA, Ph.D., professor of accountancy at John Carroll, “and one of the most versatile instructors in the accountancy department.”

Weinstein consistently rates highly in student evaluations, earning excellent scores for relevant material, course organization and teaching effectiveness.

He has also helped to develop many courses, and in 2008, he developed and began teaching a course in Accounting and Tax Issues for Nonprofit Managers.

Weinstein has a long track record of involvement with students and the accountancy profession. He serves on The Ohio Society of CPAs Executive Board and as a member of the Society’s Council of Leaders. He chairs the AAA’s Shared Experiences Committee, a group that presents various panel presentations at AAA meetings throughout the U.S., and he is a past president of the Ohio Region of the AAA.

He is also active in his community, serving on the board of directors of The Montefiore Nursing Home in Cleveland since 2006, and as a past board member of the Cleveland Food Co-op.

“Public accounting equals public service, and I promote that vision by my continuing practice and work on nonprofit boards.”

For more than 20 years, he has been faculty advisor for the university’s Deloitte and Touche Tax Case Study competitions. For 19 years, he has managed John Carroll University students’ participation in the IRS’ Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax services for low income, elderly and non-English speaking taxpayers.

“In looking back on my career, I realize that this is one of the things of which I’m most proud, because I have encouraged so many students to use acquired skills to help a disenfranchised population,” Weinstein said of his involvement with VITA. “I believe my participation in this program is consistent with my philosophy of accounting as a public service profession.”

Weinstein has an extensive research and publication record, serving as author, editor and contributor to a large volume of professional journals, books and publications. He has lent his expertise by evaluating applications for various scholarship programs and academic awards. He is a member of the Journal of Accounting Education Editorial Board and has also served for 11 years as a reviewer for the Case Research Journal.

The Ohio Society of CPAs, established in 1908, represents more than 23,000 CPAs in business, education, government and public accounting. The Ohio Society’s members not only meet statutory and regulatory requirements as CPAs, but also embrace the highest standards of professional and ethical performance. This is achieved through ongoing professional education, comprehensive quality review and compliance with a strict Code of Professional Conduct.
