OSCPA testifies supporting CPA/client privilege bill
 |
OSCPA past chair Lee Beall, CPA testified on behalf of The Ohio Society of CPAs last week advocating for Senate Judiciary-Civil Justice Committee approval of S.B. 80. The long-sought legislation promoted by OSCPA seeks to create a testimonial privilege between clients and their CPAs similar to the existing attorney/client privilege. |
Beall testified that 17 states have a privilege statute in place that is similar to or stronger than what Ohio is seeking. He outlined the critical need for legislation allowing Ohio’s businesses and individual taxpayers to fully explore confidential questions, problems and opportunities without the risk of their CPA being forced to reveal client confidences on the stand or through discovery in a legal action.
Other proponents include the National Federation of Independent Business, Ohio Manufacturers Association and Ohio Chamber of Commerce.
The bill is scheduled for a committee vote next week, which will be followed by a Senate floor vote. Society members are encouraged to contact their state senator urging a “YES” vote on S.B. 80. For more information, including contact tips, call the governmental affairs department.
