Outplacement strategies for laid-off executives


Layoffs are creeping into the millions and threatening more and more working people every day. For some out-of-work professionals, outplacement services can be a life preserver in the turbulent economic sea, and knowing how to effectively use these services can save them time on the road to their next position. If you’re lucky enough to receive this parting gift upon being let go from your job, here are some tips on how to make the most of the situation.

    • Don’t spend too long feeling sorry for yourself, because the longer you’re out of the game the more opportunities you’ll miss. Get started right away with career and resume coaching and job-hunting services that can help get you one step closer to your next job. 

    • Some career services may require you to take personality tests to assess where your skills and values lie, and while it may seem like a waste of time, career coaches say that these assignments help job seekers stay focused during interviews and provide useful material for their resumes. 

    • Do a background check on your counselor to make sure that he or she is a good fit for you. If possible, choosing counselors with lighter client loads may be more beneficial as they can provide you with more individual attention. Checking their track record and experience in your industry will also ensure that you are paired with the most helpful person for your situation. 

    • Take full advantage of classes, networking events, seminars and workshops. Attend as many events as you can to get your name out – especially if your niche is shrinking.

    • Don’t just network online. Actually going to the outplacement office to speak with a counselor or attend professional gatherings can help you make a stronger connection with people, and may be more beneficial to your job hunt. It may also get you in touch with more skilled professionals that you would not have met otherwise.
