Campaign finance law ruled unconstitutional
A Franklin County Common Pleas Judge ruled provisions of Ohio’s campaign finance law unconstitutional for the second time in six months.
The decision nullifies provisions of House Bill 694, legislation which limits how much vendors can give to public officials who award government contracts.
The bill, which was passed and signed into law in late 2006, was first found unconstitutional because the wrong version of the bill had been signed. Last year, the legislature again passed a version of the same bill in Am. Sub. HB 119, the state’s budget bill.
The latest ruling found that Am. Sub. H.B. 119 was unconstitutional in that it invalidly attempted to amend an unconstitutional statute and violated the single subject rule.
Unless the State of Ohio appeals the decision, the previous version of the law, which existed prior to April 4, 2007, is now in effect.
