Accounting for Kids® Day

What is Accounting for Kids Day?

Accounting for Kids Day teaches elementary school students that managing money can be fun. For one day in November (November 12 for this year), CPA volunteers from all over Ohio take time out of their busy schedules to participate in the Society's largest volunteer outreach program. On that day, volunteers visit elementary schools and present financial concepts to students in a fun and exciting way. Register to volunteer!

The goal of the program, in conjunction with the Financial Fitness Ohio initiative, is to meet America's growing need to understand the fundamental concepts of personal finance. It provides an opportunity to introduce financial education at a young age, planting a seed to create responsible financial habits in the future The program also gives volunteers an opportunity to introduce students to careers in accounting and business. Accounting for Kids Day is funded by The Ohio CPA Foundation.

As a volunteer, what will I do?

On Accounting for Kids Day, volunteer teams visit fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade classrooms to play an interactive investment game with each class. The game introduces students to the stock market and concepts such as saving, investing and budgeting. During the game, students buy stocks and watch their investments grow over a simulated 10-year period.

Members are encouraged to recruit coworkers and colleagues to be on their teams. Volunteers are not required to be Society members, however, the Society encourages each volunteer team to have at least one CPA and Society member. Three to four volunteers are required for each classroom.

The Society provides all classroom materials and training resources. Society staff also coordinates classroom logistics with each participating school. Volunteer teams will be assigned to schools that have signed up with the Society to participate. If there is a school in your community that you want to visit that is not already registered, let the Society know so we can work with you to get the school on board.

What kind of training do I need?

To have a successful Accounting for Kids Day event, volunteer teams must learn how to play the investment game, Portfolios, Jr. We have created a brief instructional video to serve as a guide for volunteers. Volunteers may also access a step-by-step game tutorial, which includes a script you can use in the classroom, to understand how it’s played. View the video and tutorial now!

Have any changes been made to Accounting for Kids Day in 2009?

Yes. In our efforts to make the program more cost-effective, the Society will no longer sponsor pizza as part of Accounting for Kids Day. However, we will provide up to a $25 reimbursement per classroom, if a volunteer chooses to purchase refreshments independently. Receipts must be provided for reimbursement.
