New generation seeks security in first job
The new generation coming out of college – the Millenials – are most focused on security when it comes to a potential job or employer, according to a new study from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
NACE’s 2008 Graduating Student Survey found that current graduates are more conservative about jobs and employers than were their Baby Boomer counterparts. Current respondents were asked to rank 15 job attributes in terms of their importance. The results often run counter to conventional wisdom.
- Company provides opportunity for advancement
- Company offers job security
- Company has good insurance package
- There are friendly co-workers
- The company’s location
- Company offers opportunity for personal development
- Company offers high starting salary
- There is recognition for good performance
- Company offers opportunity for self-expression/creativity
- There are clearly defined assignments
- Casual atmosphere (non-competitive environment)
- Company embraces diversity
- Company takes an active role in the community
- Company offers a signing bonus
- Company is a recognized name
The study found that many attributes commonly associated with young adults, including the opportunity for personal development and the opportunity for self-expression and creativity, ranked toward the middle of the list.
Perhaps most surprising is the ranking of community service. Much has been made of the Millennial generation’s community consciousness and yet this ranked much lower than would be expected, coming in at 13 out of 15.
