(COLUMBUS, May 14, 2008) Jordan Friel, of Bowling Green State University, received a scholarship at The Ohio Society of CPAs’ annual statewide Scholarship Day competition. Sponsored by The Ohio CPA Foundation, Scholarship Day awards a scholarship each year to an accounting student who demonstrates exceptional knowledge of the issues facing the accounting profession.

Friel and eight other college accounting students gathered last month to compete for the Society’s 2008 statewide scholarship award. Kerry Jostworth, of Miami University, received first-place honors with an award of $3,000, and Friel received the second-place award of $1,500.

Friel graduated from Bowling Green State University this month with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, specializing in accounting. He will begin graduate school at Miami University in the fall to obtain a master’s degree in accountancy. Upon completion of his MAcc, Friel will join the assurance staff at Ernst & Young in Columbus.

Each Scholarship Day participant had previously won a $1,000 regional scholarship sponsored by The Ohio Society of CPAs, which made them eligible to compete for the additional statewide award at Scholarship Day. Ohio Society members volunteered to serve as judges for the event.

The Ohio CPA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of The Ohio Society of CPAs. This 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization supports accounting and financial literacy education, and programs to interest students in selecting accounting as their major to become future CPAs. Each year, The Ohio CPA Foundation awards more than $50,000 in scholarships to accounting students at Ohio colleges and universities.

The Ohio Society of CPAs, established in 1908, represents more than 24,000 CPAs in business, education, government and public accounting.  The Ohio Society’s members not only meet statutory and regulatory requirements as CPAs, but also embrace the highest standards of professional and ethical performance.  This is achieved through ongoing professional education, comprehensive quality review and compliance with a strict Code of Professional Conduct.
