The CPA exam: What are you waiting for?
There has never been a greater demand for qualified accounting graduates, and especially for those who have the CPA designation?a sought after credential that many professional recruiters look for in placing new candidates. The CPA credential opens the door to unlimited possibilities in the accounting profession, not to mention increasing your earnings potential.
But to enter the CPA profession, you have to take the uniform CPA examination and pass each of its four parts. Not an easy task for a full-time student or someone with a full-time job.
In 2004, the traditional paper exam was retired in favor of a more dynamic, streamlined computerized exam. It’s designed to test each candidate’s knowledge and ability to apply basic skills in real-world scenarios. Simulation components were added that require candidates to use electronic resources and case studies to apply their knowledge and skills. Application, not memorization, is the key element of the exam.
The electronic exam gives you greater flexibility. You can take each part of the exam one at a time, which lets you focus on the materials for each part. Also, the testing is even more accessible than before. Exams are offered at Prometric test centers up to six days a week, during two out of every three months.
You might think that with the new format and greater flexibility, more new grads would be rushing to take the CPA exam. But the test hasn’t gotten any easier and it still requires a lot of preparation. Finding the time and motivation to sit for the exam is a struggle. That’s why it’s important to start planning early?while you’re still in school.
It’s a good idea to sit for the exam as early as possible after your 150 hours are complete. The longer you wait to take the exam, the harder it will be to motivate yourself. If you make the CPA exam a priority, it can be your ticket to an exciting and rewarding career.
