Tort reform; limiting abusive lawsuits (SB 120)
After two years of effort, The Ohio Society was successful in replacing joint and several liability with proportionate liability. The new law, which was signed by Gov. Taft on January 8, 2003, states that defendants who are 50% or less responsible for a plaintiff’s injuries pay only their proportionate share of damages as determined by the court.
Many thanks to all Ohio CPAs who worked to educate their legislators of the importance of passing this legislation.
